Direct-to-Garment Printing

With the technology first coming to the commercial market in 1996, you can imagine how quickly like everything else it has advanced. Direct-to-Garment or "DTG" printing is perfect for high quality images in small production runs. It also requires at least 50% (ideally 100%) cotton for the fabric it prints. This is because the heat press is also used in the process to prep the shirt, utilizing a pre-treat chemical which allows the print to be vibrant and reduce fibrillation in the printed area. The shirt must be heat pressed again after the printing, to evaporate any water from the ink and allow the print to cure 100%. Because of the high heat, fabrics such as polyester and other sensitive synthetics will scorch.
